Beethoven’s Serenade no. 8 was originally composed in 1796 or 1797 for violin, viola, and cello as a piece for light, evening entertainment or for amateurs to play. The work was so popular that many other arrangements for different instrumentations soon began to emerge. This arrangement for violin/flute, viola, and guitar was transcribed by Wenzeslaus Thomas Matiegka and  first published in 1807.

The piece is divided into movements titled Marcia Allegro non Molto, Adagio, Minuetto Allegretto, Adagio, Polonaise, and Andante quasi Allegretto with variations, and finishing with Allegro.
