Gunter Bialas presents the Sonata for flute and piano.

The Sonata is an unusual work amongst the flute repertoire. Bialas brings his distinctly unique language to bear on this four-movement piece, and it results in a work that, in turns, is intriguing, vivacious, and utterly striking. The first movement is a more standard Introduction, albeit with Bialas harmonic playfulness; however, it's in the second movement that Bialas's subtle harmonic oddities come to bloom, with a singing aria in the flute that brings moments of outside strangeness to sometimes complementary, sometimes alien harmonies in the piano. The fourth movement is a vivace with strains of Hindemith, and the Finale begins with a thick flute soliloquy before growing into a large Sonate finale, complete with touches of harmonic satisfaction and strangeness. An unusual though worthwhile piece.
