Premier Concerto Op. 38

Cottignies, C

Nathan Zalman presents this reduction for flute and piano of Charles Cottignies' Premier Concerto, Op. 38, for flute and orchestra. Dedicated to Tulou, in three movements; decidedly late Classical with hints of early Romanticism in style. Allegro Maestoso, Andante sostenuto, and Rondo.

Preface by Brooks de Wetter-Smith:

'In the fall of 1984, I was in Paris to research unpublished 19th-century music for flute. While there I met with Jean-Pierre Rampal, my former teacher, who was anxious to share with me a number of scores he owned, which might be of interest. He had an enormous personal library filled with unknown works, the product of a lifetime devoted to broadening our repertoire. On of the compositions he gave me was the original edition of this concerto. He said he had not played it, but thought it might be worth preparing.'

The flutist Charles Cottignies (1805-ca.1835) was born in Lille in the north of France, and studied in Paris with the imminent flutist and teacher Berbiguier. After undertaking a concerto tour throughout the French provinces and a brief sojourn in London, he settled in Strasbourg in 1828, where he spent many years as principle flute of the Strasborg Theatre. Cottignies came to prominence around 1830 for his original compositions.

For advanced players.
