Tarentelle Styrienne

Debussy, C

The French impressionistic composer Claude Debussy wrote Tarentelle Styrienne as a solo piano piece in 1890, just prior to his monumental success with the orchestral tone poem Prelude a l'apres-midi d'un faun. Unlike the Prelude, Tarentelle Styrienne is full of rhythmic drive and playfulness, exploiting the metrical ambiguities of 6/8 and 3/4 meters. It may be performed effectively either one-on-a-part or with doubling of the c-flute parts to accommodate a larger ensemble.

Instrumentation: Piccolo, 3 C flutes, alto flute, and bass flute.
