The Holy Boy
Ireland, J
John Ireland s short piano work The Holy Boy, subtitled A Carol of the Nativity , wasc= composed on Christmas Day in 1913 and published as the third of the composer's Four Preludes for piano. The work eventually became one of his best-known compositions and has been heard in a variety of alternative arrangements, including one for cello and piano made in 1919 and another for string orchestra from the early 1940s. The easy rocking triple meter, melodic grace, and peaceful, hymn-like atmosphere of this three-minute composition, as well as its relative technical simplicity, have made it a favorite.
In this present edition James Galway has arranged it for flute and piano.
