Six duos faciles [Six easy duets]
Offenbach, J

Editions Henry Lemoine presents Jacques Offebach's 'Six easy duos' from op. 49 and 50. Each duo is complete with multiple movements and tempi variation while still remaining easy enough for the beginner-intermediate flutist.

Jacques Offenbach, a French composer of German origin, was born in Cologne in 1819. From 1833, he studied the cello at the Paris Conservatoire and privately attended composition classes by F. Halevy. For three years he was cellist in the Opera-Comique orchestra. In 1850 he began conducting at the Theatre-Francais. Five years later he opened his own little lyric theatre, the 'Bouffes-Parisiens', on the Champs-Elysees where he presented light operas. His opera buffa, 'Orphee aux Enfers' (Orpheus in the Underworld), the archetype of the operetta genre, was created there on 21 October 1858. The show ran for eight months and remained Offenbach's most popular work and his greatest success. The mythological material was transformed to suit the habits of the French society of that time. It involved a satire of the second Empire (Napoleon III). In 1880 he published his last work, the opera 'Les Contes d'Hoffman' (Hoffman's Tales). He died in Paris in 1880.

Offenbach composed 102 pieces of theatre music. Those consisted in pieces for the Bouffes-Parisiens, some light music, songs, comic operas, and wonderful operettas.

At the beginning of his Paris years, Offenbach earned his living by giving salon performances of his own virtuoso violincello compositions. At this time he wrote the '6 Duets for 2 violincellos' (op. 49 to 54), edited by Editions Henry Lemoine between 1876 and 1880. This transcription for 2 flutes by Luc Urbain is based on the original edition of the '6 Duets'.
