Sonate in a [Sonata in A minor] 'Arpeggione' D. 821

Schubert, F

In all likelihood Franz Schubert was inspired to write his Sonata in A minor for the new Viennese bowed guitar , which he refered to as an Arpeggione , and by Vinzenz Schuster, an ardent champion of the new instrument, who had a primer for the guitarre-violoncell published by Diabelli and who gave Schubert s sonata its premiere performance in November of 1824.

Unlike the Arpeggione itself, a desirable addition to our art as so described in an article of the 1920s Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitung, and which had already been forgotten ten years later, Schubert s music is impervious to the passage of time, and the Arpeggione Sonata, with its ethereal beauty, has become one of the immortal treasures of the chamber music repertoire. This has led to the unique situation of a major work of art existing for an instrument that has long been extinct. From the verybeginning, the ambitus and tessitura of the arpeggione part have encouraged cellists and violists to include the work in their repertoires. On the other hand, the composer s autograph manuscript, preserved in the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, is accompanied by a violin part in the hand of a copyist, and the first printed edition of 1871 contained parts for both cello and violin. Except for a short passagein the slow movement, the arpeggione part is notated in the treble clef one octave higher than concert pitch, and it thus seemed logical to arrange the work for flute, which of course has the same range as the violin. Fortunately the sonata does not contain any chromatic passages . . . in double stops ; in fact it uses very few double stops at all, so that such an arrangement is not hampered by idiomaticstring writing of this sort. On the contrary, the arpeggione part is dominated throughout by melodious cantabile, a quality highly congenial to the character of the flute.

This Barenreiter Urtext edition presents the unaltered and unabridged text of the New Schubert Edition in the piano part, thereby allowing the user to follow freely the emendations of the arranger and, where necessary, to reach different solutions of his or her own. For the sake of clarity, on the other hand, the flute part is limited entirely to the text of the arrangement. There are no editorial additions whatsoever.
