Rhapsodie japonaise opus 48
Tchesnokov, D
Inspired by Japanese culture and based on traditional modes, RHAPSODIE JAPONAISE is also conceived as a tribute to Japanese film directors such as Nagisa Oshima, Takeshi Kitano ur Akira Kurosawa.
Part I is inspired by the dual appeal of Geisha dances that, for all their beguiling sensuality, can also be a tragic evocation of the cruelty of fate.
Part II is an evocation of the trance-like experience of No theatre.
Part III combines Medieval Japan war dances and the nocturnal ballet of neon lights in modern Japanese cities.
Performers are free to refine or modify nuances, articulations and tempi as they please, as long as this does not impair the esthetics of the piece. In particular, the flute-player could try and find different tone colors, enjoy agogic freedom and slightly raise or lower certain notes so as to create a more Eastern atmosphere. And, in the piano part, indications of pedal use have been resolutely kept to a minimum, giving the pianist free rein for creative and finely shaded playing (occasionally using the soft pedal, for example).
