Und alle Zeit ward Gegenwart [And All Time Became the Present]
Van Buren, J

John Van Buren presents Und alle Zeit ward Gegenwart for flute and organ.

From the composer:

'Recently I have again studied the poetry of Hermann Hesse, the most significant 'Maulbronnian'. His poems 'A toccata from Bach' and 'Playing the Flute' inspired me to write the present piece. In 'Playing the Flute' he expressed his idea about the essence of music; It is 'time made aesthetically perceivable. And in the present, to be sure. And thus, once again, the identity of the movement and eternity come to mind.' The title of this piece is drawn from the last line of 'Playing the Flute.'

Motives from Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor comprise the basic material of the piece; the identical notes taken from the Toccata which are used in my piece lead to different connections, but the past (Bach) is always potentially present, sometimes even through direct quotations. The three-part form supports the attempt to make the familiar sound unfamiliar, so that we may again discover it anew: for example, Bach's final cadence occurs together with the opening motive of the Toccata in the middle section of my piece and the first mordent in the Bach forms the conclusion of my piece: from the fugue theme I obtained [derived[ material for the first section of my work. On the one hand, employing the Bach motives in a manner other than in their original sequence is intended to 'free' well-known passages from the context of Bach, while on the other hand it is intended to be understood entirely symbolically (above all, where the beginning and ending occur together) in Hesse's sense of 'the identity of the moment and eternity'.'
