IMAGES was conceived by flutist Eleonor Pameijer. For quite some time she has been fascinated by Noam Ben-Jacov's sculptures and other artworks. Ben-Jacov's so called 'body sculptures' (sculptures animated by the movements of a dancer) inspired her to create a performance in which newly composed music, dance, and body sculptures would be combined.

Eleonore Pameijer invited five composers to write compositions inspired by Ben-Jacov's sculptures. The versatile sound of the flute would be the perfect counterpoint to the ever-changing shape of the sculptures: the would be balanced, neither of them would outshine the other.

Sinta Wullur's Promenade is an exploration of the tones of a particular mode. The first movement explores variants of the mode in a rubato tempo. The second movement is similar but in a very strict rhythm. In the third and following movements the entire mode is played in different transpositions. This method of exploring pitches was the result of Sinta Wullur's experience in performing classical music from India.

Martijn Padding's 'so-Solo' turns the immediate impression of a fast, loud, and high piccolo into an expression of long and soft notes in the low register. As a dialogue, however, excursions are made into the more idiomatic higher notes.

Calliope Tsoupaki's 'Calliope', the composer introduces short and fast repetitive notes. After a while they alternate with ever-lengthening melodic material. Following a long build-up, the confrontation of both identities results in a number of high and loud outbursts. After a sparkling climax, the music settles down to a few final short notes and a single long note.

Paul Termos's 'Spazio' is a composition in which the fifth is the predominating interval. The open sound of the fifth contrasts with the rather closed sound of minor and major seconds. The music starts with a simple motif, which develops and transforms, always recognizable by its basic characteristics.

Jacob ter Veldhuis's Lipstick, for flutist doubling alto flute and tape, was inspired by the hoop-sculptures of Ben-Jacov in the autumn of 1998. The tape is based on ready-made voice samples taken from American talkshows (like the Jerry Spring Show) and from one of the last radio interviews with the legendary jazz singer Billy Holiday. The electronic part is not included with this collection.
