Karl Friedrich Abel's Trio Sonata in G Major for two flutes and basso continuo (or piano) is a fairly clear intermediate-level example of late Baroque work. The two solo instruments tend to mirror each other frequently, with equal difficulty spread through both parts. An additional optional basso continuo part is provided for cello or bassoon.

Leslie Adams' Danza di tre bambole (Dance of three dolls) for piccolo, flute, and piano is a charming capriccio that begins with the piccolo stating the theme, the flute joining after the initial statement, and the piano then joining as the third doll for a full concert dance movement. Bears certain similarities to Saint-Saens' Tarantelle for flute and clarinet.

Tango from Espana

Musicians Publications presents Isaac Albeniz's Preludio & Tango from Espana arranged for 2 flutes and piano by Bill Holcombe and Bill Holcombe Jr. This duo is advanced in difficulty and 2:15 in duration.

Isaac Albeniz was born in May 1860 in Catalonia, Spain. Albeniz achieved fame as a pianist and composer. A child prodigy, he made his debut at the age of 4 and his performance was so astonishing that some considered the possibility of fraud. At the age of 7 he gave concerts in Paris and at that same age wrote a Pasadoble that was played by military bands in Barcelona. A student of composition in various conservatories throughout Europe, his ambition was to study with Franz Liszt and he achieved that goal at the tender age of 18.

Concert tours around the world and in the USA ensued and he settled permanently in Paris and became great friends with Claude Debussy. The body of works created by Albania includes three operas, and many pianoforte classics, among them his masterwork Iberia & Espana (one of his more notable pieces composed in 1890 and contains the celebrated Tango , which is known as one of his most popular works). Espana is more delightful and accessible (much easier) than Iberia . It is made up of six piano pieces that subtly reflect the influences of the piano literature of the 19th century salon, and, like Iberia , the harmony and style of Impressionism, which Albeniz himself helped to create. Both works reveal characteristics of the highly individualized piano technique Albeniz developed from early childhood and perfected under the tutelage of Liszt.

I composed this new collection of short and original duets to offer the possibility, for those who wish, to meet up and play together easily.

The piano accompaniment proposed in a separate and complete book, deliberately of a very accessible level, can be added to enrich either a practice session or a public performance. However, one will note that, in essence, it remains optional and that the original duo parts are musically sufficient on their own.

This Divertimento in G major for two flutes and basso continuo (or piano) is notable in its anonymity and yet, despite that, in its lovely melodies and beautiful pairing of solo flute lines. We could easily imagine as composer of our Divertimento either C.F. Abel, Chr. Bach or C. Stamitz - in other words, we deal here with a work from a period where the cembalo was already less often used. As such, this work can be played with two flutes and piano or with two flutes and single basso continuo instrument - bassoon or cello - as period style might have demanded, depending on true compositional origin.

Johann Christian Bach, who is distinguished from his brothers by being called either the Milan or London Bach after the places where he lived and worked, played a decisive role in the creation of the new Classical style and is considered as Mozart s actual forerunner and influential model. His extraordinarily rich oeuvre embraces all musical genres, from the opera to sacred and symphonic works, to concertos, chamber music and piano pieces.

This Barenreiter edition of the Trio in G major for two flutes and a realized keyboard accompaniment is based on a manuscript located today in the library of the conservatory of Milan. A true basso continuo part is also included for performance with a cello or bassoon.

Musicians Publications presents Ave Maria arranged for flute duet and piano by Bill Holcombe. This arrangement is easy-intermediate in difficulty.

French composer Charles Gounod, is probably best known for creating a melody that eventually was to become an Ave Maria that was to be sung over Johann Sebastian Bach s 'C Major Prelude from the Well-Tempered Klavier . Fanny Mendelssohn who was the sister of the famous composer, conductor and music historian (particularly on Bach) Felix, introduced the music of Bach to Gounod, who quickly became enamored with the old music. - Jay Fishman
