Franz et Karl Doppler’s Rigoletto-Fantasie Duo Concertant op. 38 for two flutes and piano is advanced, yet tastefully operatic and witty in style. Doppler has a knack for combining soaring beautiful melodies with technical passages. Nine minutes in length, both flute parts intertwine like a glove, and are equal in difficulty. This piece calls for precise, lightening-fast articulation, control in all dynamics, and technical facility throughout the entire range of the flute. In typical encore style, the accompanying piano supports the texture of the flutes lightly, allowing both flutes to dance about uninhibitedly, and robust with fanfare, as the flutes are resting. Franz Doppler (1821-1883) was a Romantic Period composer and virtuoso flutist. Best known for his works for the flute, Doppler too was a dynamic composer of opera, a style you can often hear in his flute compositions.
