    Tango from Espana

    Albeniz, I

Musicians Publications presents Isaac Albeniz's Tango from Espana arranged for flexible flute trio by Bill Holcombe and Bill Holcombe Jr. Scored for 3 C flutes, this trio also includes an optional alto flute part to replace flute 3 when available for performance.

Isaac Albeniz was born in May 1860 in Catalonia, Spain. Albeniz achieved fame as a pianist and composer. A child prodigy, he made his debut at the age of 4 and his performance was so astonishing that some considered the possibility of fraud. At the age of 7 he gave concerts in Paris and at that same age wrote a Pasadoble that was played by military bands in Barcelona. A student of composition in various conservatories throughout Europe, his ambition was to study with Franz Liszt and he achieved that goal at the tender age of 18.

Concert tours around the world and in the USA ensued and he settled permanently in Paris and became great friends with Claude Debussy. The body of works created by Albania includes three operas, and many pianoforte classics, among them his masterwork Iberia & Espana (one of his more notable pieces composed in 1890 and contains the celebrated Tango , which is known as one of his most popular works). Espana is more delightful and accessible (much easier) than Iberia . It is made up of six piano pieces that subtly reflect the influences of the piano literature of the 19th century salon, and, like Iberia , the harmony and style of Impressionism, which Albeniz himself helped to create. Both works reveal characteristics of the highly individualized piano technique Albeniz developed from early childhood and perfected under the tutelage of Liszt.

Sleepers Wake, The Voices Are Calling

    Bach, JS

Cantata 140 is one of Bach's most famous and beloved sacred cantatas. Based on the late-sixteenth-century hymn composed by Phillip Nicolai, Sleepers Wake is the subject of three of the cantata's seven movements. Originally arranged for two altos and bass flute, alternate C flute and alto parts are included as well, allowing for a performance by almost any combination of flutes. It is particularly effective when performed as a choir piece featuring the lower pitched flutes. Sleepers Wake is often associated with Christmas performances, but this well-recognized work can be enjoyed at any occasion.

Trio in D major, op. 87

    Beethoven, L

International Music Company presents Ludwig van Beethoven's Trio in D major, op. 87 edited for two flutes and alto flute (or B-flat clarinet, or viola) by Karl F. Kraber. Parts Only.

Prefatory note by the editor: 'Beethoven's Trio in C major for two oboes and English horn was composed in 1795 but was not published until 1806, by Artaria, as opus 87. In the same year Artaria also published a transcription for two violins and viola, for which Beethoven revised the first movement. Subsequent publications also appeared, including transcriptions for two violins and bass or bassoon (Simrock), two clarinets and bassoon (Simrock), violin and piano (Artaria), and, in D major, for two flutes and viola (Andre, Offenbach). This last was the basis of the present edition, which includes from it several changes from the original. The most notable of these are the division of the (original) first oboe part between the two flutes, and the embellishment of the English horn part (transcribed for viola, for which the anonymous editor added double stops and displaced many notes an octave lower) in measures 52-55 of the second movement.' - Karl F. Kraber

    Trio Opus 87
    Beethoven, L

An arrangement of Beethoven's trio in C major, Op. 87. Originally written in 1795 for two oboes and a cor anglais, this piece transfers well in this arrangement for two flutes and an alto flute. In four movements: a fast 1st movement, a slow and lyrical 2nd movement, a Minuetto that is really a Scherzo marked Allegro molto and finishing with a finale marked Presto. All Beethoven's stylistic traits are here, and all parts are interesting and rewarding to play. Not technically challenging, although flute one has some fast tonguing particularly in the finale. Players of grade 4 standard and upwards should be able to gain much from this piece.
