Chamberlain, N :: Lift Up
Spotted Rocket presents 'Lift Up' for woodwind quintet by composer Nicole Chamberlain.
The composer writes, 'Lift Up was commissioned by Tennessee Technological University Foundation for the Cumberland Quintet in honor of their 50th Season.
'At Tennessee Tech University, 'Wings Up' is a common saying usually accompanied with a gesture that references the flight of their mascot the Golden Eagle. The saying is used to greet, cheer and encourage others. This piece, Lift Up, is a nod to that saying and the professors in Cumberland Quintet premiering the piece who teach their students to spread their wings.
'The piece begins with an english horn flying solo, but is later supported by the other musicians. As the piece progresses, so does the elevation of keys and intensity. By the end of the piece, the music in raised as well as the resolution of the theme by the english horn which is left to fly alone, but raised and still supported by the other musicians.'

Chamberlain, N :: Beloved Community
Spotted Rocket presents 'Beloved Community' for solo flute and antiphonal flute choir by Nicole Chamberlain.
The composer writes, 'Beloved Community was inspired by the theme of the 2025 National Flute Association convention, Unity and Universal Oneness. In researching the life and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., I was drawn to his vision of 'The Beloved Community'—a powerful concept in which people, despite their differences and the conflicts that may arise, come together through love, understanding, and redemption. MLK, Jr. described this transformative force as 'agape,' a selfless, unconditional love that seeks to resolve division with goodwill and understanding for all.
'The composition reflects this vision of unity amidst diversity. The flute choir is spread throughout the performance space, with each group of flutes presenting contrasting ideas and musical conflicts. The solo flute then enters as a single voice, soaring above the dissonance and tension, representing a force of reconciliation. As the piece unfolds, the soloist challenges and shifts the other groups, gradually persuading them to listen, to understand, and to harmonize with one another. Through this musical journey, Beloved Community embodies the hope that even the most complex conflicts can be resolved through mutual respect and love, leading to a unified, harmonious whole.'

Chamberlain, N :: Frenemies
Spotted Rocket presents 'Frenemies' for flute and Bb clarinet by composer Nicole Chamberlain.
The composer writes about this piece: 'Frenemies' is about that competitive relationship between two colleagues who appear to be friendly, but they missed the memo about what friendship really means. Are they friends or are they enemies? It's that awkward middle ground where, if the pair were not on the same level in their careers, they might be friends. Instead, they have to get along and work with each other while competing for gigs. There's one-upmanship, hurt feelings, back-handed compliments, insincerity, gossip, and, of course, no one wins.
'This piece was written for the composer's friends, Mary Matthews and Mark Cramer. They would like everyone to know this piece is not about them. They are actually fantastic friends and care about each other very much.'

Chamberlain, N :: The Phoenix
The Phoenix
Chamberlain, N
Nicole Chamberlain's The Phoenix is a large-scale fanfare utilizing beatboxing and jet whistles to illustrate the flight of the rising and soaring phoenix.
The Atlanta Flute Club commissioned Nicole Chamberlain to compose a fanfare to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Atlanta Flute Club s Flute Choir Extravaganza. A bronze monument by James Sieglar found in Atlanta s Woodruff Park depicts a female figure holding the legs of a flying phoenix, and as the mythological creature of the phoenix is often used to symbolize Atlanta it seemed a perfect subject. After Atlanta was burned during the Civil War, the city rebuilt and today has become an important international city, and this fanfare reflects that.
