This piece is written as a split ensemble: piccolo/flute 1/flute 2 and flute 3/flute 4/alto, with bass flute as an intermediary. The two groups develop motives, playing with and against each other, with bass flute interposed between them. Plagal cadences developed during the 'Cori spezzati' period and other fourth harmonies are often used in this song, so give proper attention to treating these unusual chords.
