Partita a-Moll (BWV 1013) | Sonata C-Dur (BWV 1033) [Partita in A Minor BWV 1013 | Sonata in C Major (BWV 1033)]

Bach, JS

It is widely assumed (Schmitz: Neue Bach Ausgabe) that the Partita, whose writing is not idiomatically suited to the flute, was originally composed for a different instrument. On the other hand Robert L. Marshall in his essay 'Zur Echtheit und Cronologie der Bach'schen Flotensonaten: Biographische und stilistische Erwagungen' argues the thesis that Bach composed the Partita for the celebrated Dresden flautist Pierre Gabriel Buffardin (1689-1768). Bach is known to have been acquainted with Buffardin, the technically most accomplished flutist of his day in the German-speaking world. Quantz, who was a pupil of Buffardin in Dresden, testifies that the latter's forte was 'fast pieces.' Marshall also puts forward the interesting conjecture that the C major Sonata (BWV 1033) could have been composed at the same time as a solo flute work, thus forming a pendant to the Partita (along the lines of the later Partitas and Sonatas for unaccompanied violin). Marshall speculates that the bass part was added at a later stage - as an exercise - by C.P.E. Bach, in whose hand the oldest copy with the attribution to J.S. Bach is extant.
