Itinerant
Takemitsu, T
Itinerant for solo flute was written in 1989 by Toru Takemitsu in memory of the sculptor, Isamu Noguchi, who was a friend to Takemitsu. This contemporary solo is classified as difficult and should be considered by flutists of the collegiate or higher level of playing. The first performance was given by Paula Robison at the Isamu Noguchi Museum in New York in 1989.
In keeping with traditions of Japanese gardening, Noguchi sought to transform existing spaces to show the natural beauty each location had always possessed. He believed that through sculpture and architecture, one could better understand mankind s struggle with nature. Takemitsu translated this to music as a struggle between silence and sound, or a fight to organize the natural element of sound into unnatural traditional Western forms.
