Alpher, D :: Atlantic Legend
Atlantic Legend
Alpher, DFor flute, viola, and harpsichord. Evokes images of the craggy, rock bound coast of New England and the timeless lore of the North Atlantic. Although the instrumentation suggests a Baroque continuo sound, the musical material is exclusively 20th Century.
'The most pleasant discovery on the program ... The piece is both lyrical and robust ... The second movement is a set of variations on a theme that might have come from the pen of Ralph Vaughan Williams or Aaron Copland in his Appalachian Spring mood.'
- Dallas Morning News
'The music has an American pastoralist accent in the Introduction and Toccata and is also jazzily and excitingly syncopated with scorching writing for the two string instruments ... The [Serenade and Variations] Appalachian-sentimental melody is very touching.'

Alpher, D :: Cantilena
Cantilena
Alpher, DDavid Alpher presents Cantilena for flute and viola. From the composer:
'As its name suggests, Cantilena is all about singing, lyric lines. It s a songlike dialogue, with contrasting tempi. While melodies are hardly foreign to either instrument, the viola-in the chamber literature and especially the symphonic literature-has had a surfeit of accompanimental, supporting figures. This unthrilling role is kept to a bare minimum in Cantilena. I tried to create a genuine duo, a give-and-take aural relationship between two beautiful instruments that rarely have the whole stage to themselves.'

Anderson, TJ :: Bridging and Branching
Bridging and Branching
Anderson, TJT.J. Anderson presents Bridging and Branching for flute and double bass.
From the composer:
'While thinking about the commission from Richard Hunt to write a work for Flute and Double Bass, I happened to notice in my living room a model of Richard's sculpture titled Bridging and Branching. The work stimulated a process that defined the composition. The piece is based on cells which exist in varying environments that change throughout the work. Its title also implies ways of linkage between the two instruments and the music is influenced by contemporary tends, jazz, Baroque, and Renaissance music.'
For advanced players.

Trio Sonata in G major Wq. 152 - for flute, violin and basso continuo (cello or basson ad lib.)
When Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-1788) composed this trio sonata in Potsdam during the year 1754, he had already served 14 years as first chamber cembalo player for Frederick the Great. The second son of Johann Sebastian Bach - at the time more famous than his father - held this position as accompanist of the flute-playing king for 27 years, beginning with the accession to the throne by Frederick in 1740 until 1767, when he followed George Philipp Telemann as director of church music in Hamburg.

Bach, JS :: Musikalisches Opfer [Musical Offering] Volume II - Trio Sonata in C minor BWV 1079
Musikalisches Opfer [Musical Offering] Volume II - Trio Sonata in C minor BWV 1079
Bach, JSThe Trio Sonata, the most extensive part of Johann Sebastian Bach's Musical Offering, was undoubtedly intended as a special gift to the flute-playing King Frederick II of Prussia. It represents the most mature and at the same time, the last example of Bach's efforts in the genre 'trio sonata' in the four-movement form that he especially favored. Stylistically, it occupies a special position, primarily in that it fulfills the ideals of the 'empfindsamer Stil' cultivated at the Prussian court. This is significant especially for the subtle phrasing and articulation of all the movements, the dynamic contrasts, and the thoroughly affective manner of declamation as well as the abrupt harmonic changes of the third movement.
This Barenreiter Urtext publication is based on the edition of the entire work in the Neue Bach-Ausgabe. This edition includes a realized keyboard by the Kirnberger, a pull-out flute and a pull-out violin part, and an additional pull-out basso continuo part for use in place of the keyboard if so desired.
