Henri Marteau's Partita for flute and viola, op. 42/2 and published in 1934, is a brilliant contribution to the sparse literature for flute and viola duo. Taking the form of a Suite of old dances (deeply French, in C minor - with all the depth of expression that key entails), the work is a gem, a masterstroke in expression, melody and instrumental finesse. The five movements - a Praeludium e Fuga, a Courante, a Marcia funebre, a Menuett, and a Giga - excellently exploit the idiomaticisms of both instruments for full effect.
