Frank Stewart's Toccata Sonora, for flute, trombone, and piano, is something of an unknown major work. A trombone solo opens the piece, making full use of mute technique, as the flute makes quiet interjections underneath. The two instruments build in fervor until the piano enters with huge tremolo chords, marking the beginning of the aggressive toccata section which continues to the end.
