American Composers Alliance presents 'Two Fantasias' for Native American flute and percussion, composed by Kazuo Tokito. 

The composer writes, 'in the empty space of time, we create sounds for music within us. We can instantly see this space in a pause between sounds; in Japanese, this space is called 'MA.' Soon one realized that 'MA' is not only describing a pause but all of the sounds themselves are floating within the total space of 'MA'. Some Zen Buddhists used Shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) to experience this phenomenon. I consider the Native American flute also to be a perfect vehicle to enter this space -- 'MA.'
