Concerto in D major

Pergolesi, G

International Music Company presents Pergolesi's 'Concerto in D major' for flute and piano edited by Jean-Pierre Rampal.

Giovanni Battista Pergolesi was an Italian composer, violinist and organist. He studied music there under a local musician, Francesco Santini, before going to Naples in 1725, where he studied under Gaetano Greco and Francesco Feo among others. He spent most of his brief life working for aristocratic patrons like the principe di Stigliano and the duca di Maddaloni. Giovanni Battista Pergolesi was one of the most important early composers of opera buffa (comic opera). His opera seria Il prigioner superbo contained the two act buffa intermezzo, La Serva Padrona (The Servant Mistress, August 28, 1733), which became a very popular work in its own right.

- Aryeh Oron, 2006

This concerto is truly of the Baroque period, as the solo flute melody is highly embellished right from the start of the piece. It is also lacking the double exposition that became standard practice sometime during the Classical era and includes a fourth movement which is also uncommon for a concerto.
