Fantasie uber 'Der Freischutz' [Fantasy on 'Der Freischutz']

    Taffanel, CP

This edition is based on an imaginative paraphrase of Carl Maria von Weber's opera Der Freischutz by Claude-Paul Taffanel. Inspired by the new technical possibilities of the Bohm instrument, Taffanel founded the French school of flute playing, was a flautist and conductor at the Opera-Comique in Paris and was a teacher at the Paris Conservatoire. This publication is part of The Flute Collection, which brings together a range of selected pieces from the international concert life of famous flautists, curated by internationally acclaimed flautist Emmanuel Pahud. For advanced players. Includes score and part.

    Andante Pastoral and Scherzettino

    Taffanel, P

International Music Company presents Paul Taffanel's 'Andante Pastoral and Scherzettino' for flute and piano.

'As professor of flute at the Conservatoire de Paris, Paul Taffanel had the opportunity of commissioning new pieces not only for flute, but for all the wind and brass instruments on the occasion of the institution s annual 'concours' (competitions). He thereby helped create an enduring solo repertoire for them. The flute 'concours' of the Conservatoire of Paris was not only the most important annual event for the flutists of the institution, but also served as a platform to present new music. Composers such us Gabriel Faure, Cecile Chaminade, Joachim Andersen, Alphonse Duvernoy, and Louis Ganne were all commissioned to create the contest piece. The Andante Pastoral et Scherzettino was composed by Paul Taffanel himself as the competition piece for the 1906 flute 'concours'. It was his final work. Dedicated to his student Philippe Gaubert, the Andante Pastoral et Scherzettino, like the majority of morceaux de concours, falls as the title implies into two sections, slow and fast, that showcase the player s musical and technical skills.'

    Taffanel, P

Paul Taffanel (born in Bordeaux on 16 September 1844, died in Paris on 21 November 1908) was solo flutist at the Paris Opera comique and professor of flute at the Paris Conservatoire. Among the pupils of his class were Philippe Gaubert and Marcel Moyse, the greatest French flutists of their generation. It was perhaps the close relationship to his pupils who, according to Georges Barrere, were to him, without exception, 'musical sons', which makes Andante pastoral et Scherzettino stand out among his compositions. Dedicated to his favourite pupil Philippe Gaubert and composed in the last year of his life, its style is reminiscent of Faure who for his part dedicated his famous Fantasia to his friend Taffanel. Energetic and richly colourful, the work demands a subtle interpretation, especially with regard to sound and technique..

Fantaisie sur Jean de Nivelle [Fantasy on Jean de Nivelle]

    Taffanel, P

From the publisher, Gerard Billaudot, and revised by Phillippe Bernold, Paul Taffanel’s ‘Fantaisie sur Jean de Nivelle’ from ‘Opera de Leo Delibes’ is a gem in the flute repertoire. Bernold states, "Taffanel so admired Delibes’ opera that he composed a fantaisie on ‘Jean de Nivelle’ in 1881, the year following the opera’s creation. The ‘Ballade de la Mandragore’ is taken from Act I, the ‘Trio bouffe and Fabliau’ (short fable) from Act II, ‘La Marche des Archers’ (as a prelude to Trio bouffe) from Act III. The Introduction to the ‘Fantaisie’ takes after the beginning ‘Fabliau.’ As always, particular attention must be paid to precision, lightness of articulation, sound and expressions."

Paul Taffanel, ‘Founder of the French School of Flute Playing’ was a beloved French composer and flutist of the 19th century.

    Fantaisie sur Les Indes Galantes

    Taffanel, P

The Fantaisie on Rameau's opera Les Indes galantes is something of an oddity. Rescued from oblivion at the end of the 19th century by Saint-Saens and Paul Dukas, this opera was recreated some time later. Most probably did Taffanel an active role in the process. Some elements (in the piano interludes, particularly) are of course typical of the 19th century musical approach of that earlier repertoire. As always, one should pay particular attention to articulation (light and precise) and purity of sound, two essential features of Taffanel's technique. It is interesting to note that, whereas the main themes are indeed taken from Les Indes galantes, the beginning of the piece borrows from another Rameau opera: Hippolyte et Aricie.     -Philippe Bernold

    Taffanel, P

From the publisher, Gerard Billaudot, and transcribed by Philippe Bernold, Paul Taffanel’s ‘Sicilienne etude’ op. 7 for flute and piano was composed in 1885, and is a piece of great delicacy. Bernold states, "The style is similar to that of his friend Camille Saint Saens, but the harmonies have Wagerian colours. Special attention should be paid to embouchure and velocity (especially in the middle section). But the main difficulty lies in mastering perfect breathing technique."

  • Tailleferre, G :: Concertino

Germaine Tailleferre’s Concertino for Flute and Piano Soloists with orchestra has a curious history. Premiered in 1953 by Jean-Pierre Rampal and Robert Veyron-Lacroix, the double concertino enjoyed overwhelming audience enthusiasm thanks to its French flashiness and melodic charm, only to mysteriously disappear after that premier performance.

In 1997 - half a century later - Billaudot began to offer a tentative version reconstructed from a transcription of the concert tapes, but it was not until 2002 that the original manuscripts were finally found in the collection of the French flutist Jacques Castagner shortly before his death.

We offer this rediscovered version in Tailleferre’s own reduction for flute and piano with a second piano accompanying. This edition also includes Rampal’s written comments and performance notes, approved by the composer herself.

  • Tailleferre, G :: Deuxieme Sonate [Second Sonata]

    Deuxieme Sonate [Second Sonata]
    Tailleferre, G

The Deuxieme (Second) Sonata by Germaine Tailleferre, arranged for flute and piano by Virginia Broffitt Kunzer.

Germaine Tailleferre is perhaps best known for her musical output as the only female member of Les Six (French: Le Groupe des Six), a name formally given to a French compositional group in 1920 that also included Georges Auric, Louis Durey, Arthur Honneger, Darius Milhaud, and Francis Poulenc. Tailleferre s 1951 Deuxieme Sonate pour violon et piano, or the Second Sonata for violin and piano, is a revision of her unsuccessful 1936 Violin Concerto, without cadenza and with various musical tweaks and alterations. This new transcription of the Sonate codifies many of the alterations flutists have impressed upon the violin part, allowing for a smooth rendition and clear balancing of the parts.
