Bossa
Varelas, DBossa, for flute and piano, was written in 2007 and is a kind of homage to Carlos Antonio Jobim, the father of Bossa Novas. This music is full of Brazilian national color and has the delicate aroma of Bossa Nova. There are beautiful harmonies and rhythms as the piano lines combine with the long flute melody. Listen closely and you can almost feel the warm ocean breeze.

Varelas, D :: Sonata Ardente
Sonata Ardente
Varelas, D
Sonata Ardente was written in 2006-07 and was dedicated to the professor of the Sibelius Academy Mikael Helasvuo, Dmitriy Varelas' former teacher of flute. It was premiered by the composer on flute and the wonderful Hungarian pianist Andrasi Gertrud in Helsinki, at the concert hall of the Sibelius Academy. 'Ardente' means fiery, fervent, passionate and glowing. This sonata consists of several sections:
First section - Andante espressivo, full of hidden and condensed expressions. There are many 'rubato' phrases, which gives the performer ample space to express emotions. This movement feels like compressed steel spring that can spring open at any moment.
Second section - Rubato is sort of a cadenza, but written for both players - flute and piano. It's a very beautiful and fiery section; full of waves and explosions. There are many flute effects employed such as voice singing, different tongue articulations, harmonics, hissing, key clicks, etc.
Third section - Presto is kind of a barbarian dance with very fast virtuoso technique for both flute and piano; full of variable rhythms. It is a very passionate and glowing section. The last climax of this section leads us to the Meno Poco Rubato, which forms an arc with the first section. It remains about condensed expressions, but this time the compressed spring has sprung open to deliver the emotional peak of the work.

Vasks, P :: [Konzert] Concerto
[Konzert] Concerto
Vasks, PIn the Concerto for Flute and Orchestra, performed for the first time by Michael Faust, Semyon Bychkov and the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne in 2009, the burlesque middle movement, with its firm determination reminiscent of Shostakovich, is framed by melancholic outer movements flowing along in serene tranquillity and beauty. Passages with wind chorales and distant ringing of bells alternate with passages the mood of which ranges from meditative via lamenting to euphoric. This piano score is suited for students, soloists and conductors to make themselves familiar with Vasks' contribution to the genre of solo concerto for flute.

Vasks, P :: Aria e danza
Aria e danza
Vasks, PPeteris Vasks has added two pieces to the flute and piano repertoire which are well suited for both domestic music-making and concert-hall performances. Aria is a gentle, meditative dialogue between flute and piano in A minor. The second piece, Danza, is a stylised dance with an original rhythm, archaic harmony and playful melody rooted in folkloristic grounds. Peteris Vasks was born in Latvia in 1946. His music often forms a symbiosis of early and modern music techniques. Here, as in most of the other works by the composer, his love of nature plays a special role. Unlike hardly any other composer, he gives nature a musical voice.

Vaughan Williams, R :: Suite de Ballet
Suite de Ballet
Vaughan Williams, R
"Ralph Vaughan Williams was a 20th century English composer, best known for his collections and arrangements of English folk songs. While not one of his better known works, Suite De Ballet for Flute and Piano, composed around 1924, is a prime example of this. Each of the four movements is influenced by or taken from English folk songs and dances.
The first movement, Improvisation, is slow and lyrical, and meant to sound as if the flute is improvising the ethereal melody. Humoresque is a short, quick and lively movement, which is characteristic of the humoresque genre.
Although originating in France, the gavotte was also a very popular dance in England. Gavotte, as is common for any gavotte, begins in the middle of a bar, and then continues with an easy dance feel.
The final movement, Passepied, is the longest and most exciting movement. However, unlike traditional passepied dances, this movement is notated in 2/4, instead of 3/8 or 6/8." - Shey Dillon, 2013
