FdQ-Rag

Hanselmann, A

"In 2003 the 'Freune der Querflote' society (FdQ - Friends of the Flute) celebrated its twentieth anniversary. One year later, on being honoured for ten years of membership, I decided to write an FdQ-Rag which I have dedicated to the society and, in particular, to its recently deceased founder Elli Edler Busch and to my dear friend, the society's chairman, Theo Kinder.

The duo is set in such a way that it is also very well suited to playing with two piccolos. I have therefore added some octave transitions to the parts, so that the lower registers can also be played without a B foot joint.

A short and striking intro is followed by module-like themes that constantly change from part to part. I have tried here to divide the solos among all the parts. For the sake of greater clarity in the trio and quartet versions, I have also placed [a symbol] above the thematic entries, which has proved to be very useful for performance purposes.

As with all ragtimes, the FdQ-Rag should not be played too quickly, but with exact rhythm and strictly adhering to the articulation, intentionally keeping syncopated quavers long and the following crotchet short. In addition, it is important to make the crochets in the walking-bass passages sound light-footed like a plucked double bass." - Alexander Hanselmann
