30 Studies op. 107
Karg-Elert, S
Sigfrid Karg-Elert (1877-1933) was a German composer of considerable fame in the early 20th century. He studied music at the Leipzig Conservatory, where he became a staff member in 1919. His real name was Karg, the Elert having been added early in his career at the suggestion of his concert-agent. Karg-Elert's works enjoyed reasonable popularity in the United States but his performance skills were less admired, and his single tour of the United States in the early 1930s was not well-received.
Karg-Elert's '30 Studies' op. 107 is practiced world wide by advanced flutists who are looking for challenging etudes to improve technical flexibility. These etudes feature intensive use of chromaticism, mixed meter, and contrasting styles that require a high level of musical knowledge and focus to achieve successfully.
