    Kingma & Brannen Alto Flute

Redesigned in 2011 with the help of Bickford Brannen, Eva Kingma redesigned her alto flutes, creating a light and elegant mechanism. The keys feature open holes, one of the only alto flutes of its kind. This allows for different timbral affects and fingerings, opening a whole new range of repertoire for the alto flutist.

A Kingma System® flute is, in all respects, a Boehm system flute with a C# trill. All of the normal touch pieces and fingerings are where you would expect them to be. What makes this flute so unique is that, in addition to the standard Boehm mechanism, there are six extra keys. This is made possible through the use of the patented key-on-key system that has been used so successfully on their alto and bass flutes for many years. These keys are used to produce six of the seven quartertones and multiphonic vents which are “missing” on the normal French model flute. The seventh “missing” quartertone is achieved by using the C# trill key together with the normal C key. The other five quartertones are produced by using the normal, open hole keys.

The body and headjoint of the flute are solid silver with soldered tone holes, and padded with Straubinger pads. To limit the weight, silver-plating is used for the mechanism with pointed or Y-arms. The mechanism can even be adjusted (for no extra charge) for players with smaller hands.

  • Matusi Buzzing Headjoint

The sterling silver Matusi headjoint, fitted with a vibrating membrane operated by a key, is an invention of Matthias Ziegler and worked out by Eva Kingma, an innovative flutemaker from The Netherlands. Created in Kingma's workshop by David Kerkhof, Matusi headjoints allow a quick switch between a dark, pure flute sound and a buzzing tone, useful for the increasing number of modern compositions that use this type of buzzing tone, many written for Gudrun Hinze, especially, and her flute quintet.

The Matusi sound is audible here, in this transcription for flute quintet of Saint-Saens' Danse Macabre.
