Judith Shatin's Ruah, a three-movement work for flute and orchestra (presented here as the reduction for flute and piano), is, in certain respects, quite traditional - a swirling, airy first movement gives way to a slow and tender center movement, then concludes with a fast-paced finale. However, Ruah (a Hebrew word that roughly translates to "air" or "breath"), takes its title to heart - the opening movement is a tone poem on all manner of flighted creatures, and the following two movements expand on the themes and ideas found in that first movement.
Tonal and charming, with large open intervals and frequent arpeggiation. For advanced players.
