Albeniz, I :: Capricho Catalan & Zortzico from Espana

Capricho Catalan & Zortzico from Espana
    Albeniz, I

Musicians Publications presents Isaac Albeniz s Capricho Catalan & Zortzico from Espana arranged for woodwind quintet by Bill Holcombe and Bill Holcombe Jr. Scored for flute, oboe, clarinet, French horn, and bassoon, this quintet also includes a bass clarinet part to substitute for the bassoon when necessary. This arrangement is advanced in difficulty and 3:15 in duration.

Isaac Albeniz was born in May 1860 in Catalonia, Spain. Albeniz achieved fame as a pianist and composer. A child prodigy, he made his debut at the age of 4 and his performance was so astonishing that some considered the possibility of fraud. At the age of 7 he gave concerts in Paris and at the same age wrote a Pasadoble that was played by military bands in Barcelona. A student of composition in various conservatories throughout Europe, his ambition was to study with Franz Liszt and he achieved that goal at the tender age of 18.

Concert tours around the world and in the USA ensued and he settled permanently in Paris and became great friends with Claude Debussy. The body of works created by Albania includes three operas, and many pianoforte classics, among them his masterwork Iberia & Espana (one of his more notable pieces composed in 1890 contains the celebrated Tango , which is known as one of his most popular works). Espana is more delightful and accessible (much easier) than Iberia . It is made up of six piano pieces that subtly reflect the influences of the piano literature of the 19th century salon, and like Iberia , the harmony and style of impressionism which Albeniz himself helped to create. Both works reveal characteristics of the highly individualized piano technique Albeniz developed from early childhood and perfected under the tutelage of Liszt. - Bill Holcombe

Musicians Publications presents J.S. Bach's 'Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring arranged for flexible woodwind quintet by Bill Holcombe. Scored for flute, oboe, clarinet, French horn, and bassoon, this flexible quintet also includes an optional bass clarinet part to replace the bassoon when necessary. This arrangement is intermediate in difficulty.

Bach was not considered a saint by his students and contemporaries in Leipzig. However, he was obviously sincere when he write, 'The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul. If heed is not paid to this, it is not true music. With his demanding schedule, Bach must have felt a need for spiritual assistance very often. In addition to many other responsibilities, he composed (and taught) over 250 cantatas in five yearly sets one for each Sunday of the year. Although characteristic of his genius, Bach's cantatas were considered old fashioned by his composer sons and many other musicians. Only one was published during his lifetime: his widow sold a large bundle of manuscripts for about 40 dollars.

This still-popular chorale, from a melody by Johan Schop (1590-1664), occurs at the close of Bach's 'Cantata No. 147 Be Thou Cheerful, O My Spirit . He used the same melody in Nos. 233 and 365 of his four-part chorales.

Scored for flute, oboe, clarinet, French horn, and bassoon, this flexible quintet also includes an optional bass clarinet part to replace the bassoon when necessary. This arrangement is intermediate-advanced in difficulty.

Sleepers, Awake!' is one of J.S. Bach's most exquisite works, both in its cantata and chorale-prelude versions, and although some may not recognize it by name (or have heard the originals), many are nevertheless familiar with its hauntingly beautiful melodies. Much of this present-day fame is the result of the LP recording made by Eugene Ormandy conducting The Philadelphia Orchestra. His orchestral version was for many record collectors their first hearing of the music. Today, this band version delivers anew the same gift to students and audiences, providing them firsthand experience of some of the greatest music ever composed. The Lutheran hymn-tune of Philipp Nicolai is central to Bach's two versions of Sleepers, Awake! , the first in 1731 in Cantata BWV 140, Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme' and the next in 1746 as the first chorale prelude for organ in the Schubler Chorales BWV 645-650. Bach's texture is three-part: a florid, motivic, upper voice; the hymn tune below it; and a firm, supportive bass. Bach's brilliant working out of these elements yields a work of compelling grandeur and power.
