Kanon [Canon]
Pachelbel, J

Johann Pachelbel's now-famous Canon is in fact a set of short canonic variations superimposed on a ground bass fragment of only two bars, and in its original form was written for three treble voices and a continuo. This 'reduction' for wind trio (flute, clarinet, and bassoon) was made on special request, and by necessity the bassoonist has a much more interesting part that they might have in larger transcriptions of the piece. The inventiveness and concision of Pachelbel, nonetheless, come through very nicely.
