Jan van Vlijmen's Solo IV, Against That Time (if ever that time come) for alto flute alone, is a large-scale work written on the Shakespeare Sonnet 49 of the same name.

Though the Solo IV begins with long held notes in a rubato exploration of tone, it holds within itself an enormous variance of techniques and ideas. From those simple opening notes it slowly develops into an enormously intricate masterwork, complete with fiery bursts of notes, complex fugal writing, rhythms that mimic speech patterns, and large intervallic flourishes throughout its single-movement span.
