Six Simple Old Carols
Traditional
Six Simple Old Carols presents clear, charming arrangements of medieval Christmas music for two flutes, oboes, or violins.
'The two parts in this edition are interchangeable. In most arrangements the top part has the melody. In 'The Seven Joys of Mary' the melody is in the bottom part (measures 1-8), then switches to the top part (measures 9-16). When combining different instruments, pay close attention to instrumental color and the quality, strength and weakness of any particular range. It is probably best to keep the flute on the top part, and not put the oboe over the flute unless a particular affect is desired. Mix these instruments when possible. One combination of 'What Child is This?' could be flute on part one (measures 1-8), violin on part two (measures 1-8), oboe on top (measures 9-12), violin stays on part two to the end; back to flute on top (measures 13-16). You may add a third voice (i.e., oboe) to fill in the implied harmony, ending on G (measures 15-16).'
