The Sacred Flutist is a collection of 24 Songs and Hymns arranged for solo flute by Judy Nishimura. The perfect companion for a flutist looking for music to play at a church service, a solo gig, or just to enjoy at home. Additionally, each arrangement has retained the key signature most commonly associated with the tune, thus they can easily be used as a prelude or introduction to the same titles used during a church service.
From Judy Nishimura:
In 2019, ALRY encouraged me to write a book of Christmas solos for flute alone. I wrote it, even though I thought it an odd idea at the time, but it was well received and put the logical follow-up, a book of solo hymn arrangements suitable for the rest of church year, on the front burner for 2020. Little did I know that a terrible pandemic which would all but stifle ensemble playing for a long time, would create an urgent need for solo material.
Included in this volume are 24 new arrangements of some of the best-loved classic hymns and spirituals. Because it’s difficult to sustain interest with a single unaccompanied wind instrument, I’ve kept the length of these pieces down to around two minutes. The arrangements generally start with an intro, move on to a moderately embellished version of the melody, then transition to a more ornate variation. I put breath markings in a few of the pieces as a suggestion only; since the player has so much latitude with tempo, I didn’t want to impose a too strict breathing guide.
As with The Christmas Flutist book, all musical aspects of these pieces can be adjusted to suit the player’s abilities. Feel free to adjust tempos or add pauses, ornaments and flourishes as needed. Play these in church, or indeed anywhere.
Play them for yourself when you feel the need for a little solace. We can always use some of that.
