Walter Zachert's Melodische Ubungen [Melodic Exercises] for flute can be used to supplement any flute method. They begin with studies of intermediate difficulty which the student can master within the first six months of studying the flute. They are in progressive order and contain a variety of exercises such as scales, intervals, tone production, rhythm, ornaments, chromatic scales, etc. It is a well-known fact that students get easily bored with pure and simple technical exercises; these studies, however, have been composed in a tuneful way. To guarantee a sure progress, all studies even though already learned, and especially the fundamental ones, have to be repeated time and time again.
