These etudes are his legacy, but they should not completely overshadow his 54 works for flute and piano, which include both brilliant showpieces (two of which served as Paris Conservatory concours works in the 1890s) and charming miniatures for the salon.

"Au bord de la mer' shows Anderson at his most creative. Expansive for a 'morceau de salon,' it opens with a long piano introduction of undulating triplets that sets the scene of an inconstant, at times turbulent, sea. Evocative harmonies, later associated with French Impressionism, and passionate rubato contribute to the scene. Although the work can be understood in ternary form with respect to its tonal scheme, thematically, it is better described as a fantasie.
