Since many audience members are not familiar with flutes other than the C flute and the piccolo, he wrote this piece to describe each of the instruments. Using the fugue theme, this piece demonstrates the piccolo, Eb flute, C flute, alto flute, and bass flute allowing the audience to follow as each voice is added to the ensemble. (An alternate second piccolo part is included if there is no Eb flute available).
