The king and his courtiers travelled by barge from Whitehall to Chelsea, dined, and returned. At the King's request, a second barge for the musicians accompanied them, performing music especially composed by Handel. The King so enjoyed the performance of this music that he requested it to be played three times during the excursion. Whether this was the event for which the Water Music was composed, or for an earlier trip on August 22, 1715 is unknown, as are so many of the other details about this music. First of all, Handel's autograph score is yet to be found and therefore current editions are taken from the various published contemporary editions, even including transcriptions for the harpsichord. In these different collections of the work, the order and number of pieces vary considerably. For example, in Walsh's instrumental publication, only nine of the twenty movements are included.

In this transcription for flute ensemble, three movements from each of the separate suites were selected. The first two movements are from the Suite in D, with the following three from the Suite in G. The four movement Suite in G was the only part of the work that included parts for the German flutes and flauti piccoli. Therefore, all three movements that originally employed flutes have been included in this version. (There is some discussion that this suite may have been used as the indoor music performed for the King's dining, rather than on the river). The sixth, seventh, and eighth movements are all taken from the Suite in F with the Hornpipe from the Suite in D closing this collection.

A few dynamic suggestions have been added to this edition, but much can still be left to the discretion of the conductor and/or performers, remembering the frequent use of terrace dynamics in the baroque style.'

- Nancy Nourse
