As a child he played there himself while simultaneously studying piano at the Warsaw Conservatory. In 1939 he fled from Poland to Minsk; the evacuation of the Minsk Conservatory let him to Tashkent, then in 1943 to Moscow with the help of Shostakovich, where he lived until his death in 1996.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe Concerto No. 2, op 148 for flute and piano, like the first concerto, was written for and dedicated to the Russian flutist Aleksandr Korneyev. The autograph manuscript of the reduction, by the composer himself, is what this present reduction is based on.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe first three quartets of the opening Allegro are something of a transcription of Weinberg's Sonata 2 for violin and piano - many of Weinberg's works from the time of the second flute concerto are, to a greater or lesser extent, reworking of unpublished youthful works. Troubled and brooding from the outset, the Largo second movement follows a somewhat stony path towards a stark climax, which breaks off for a recall of the opening.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eLike so many of Weinberg's finales, the Allegretto is the most obviously tinged with dance-like, ethnic turns of phrase, though here geniality comes with an attendant sense of loss thanks to the sparse textures, subdued dyanmics, and elusive harmonies. After a declamatory climax, Weinberg unexpectedly slips in quotations from favorite pieces in the flute repertoire: the Dance of the Blessed Spirits from Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice and the Badinerie from Bach's Suite No. 2, whose fragments alternate as though momentarily glimpsed behind a transparent but impenetrable veil.
