He composed the Three Romances for oboe and piano in Dresden in December of the same year and is said to have given them to his wife, Clara Wieck Schumann, as a Christmas present. She performed them privately for the Schumann household with the concertmaster of the Royal Chapel, Franz Schubert. The practice of playing the works on either oboe or violin continues to this day.
