Bernold states, \"\u003cem\u003eArioso\u003c\/em\u003e is a free arrangement for flute and piano  of an air from act 1, in which Lensky, a young Saint Petersburg dandy declares his love to Olga. The piece was composed and premiered by Taffanel himself on February 27, 1888, at a reception in honor of the great Russian composer. ‘Arioso’ requires impeccable  breathing technique and its beautiful melodic lines have that particular vocal quality which characterizes superior flute playing.
