The simply-made tin whistle with six holes produces the typically raw sound which one immediately associates with green meadows, hills and cliffs. The wind, which persistently blows in from the Atlantic, whistling around the cottage, with its promising aromas, this invisible element, from a light breeze to a fierce storm, is expressed most effectively through a wind instrument such as the flute. This collection of traditional Irish melodies is suitable for flute, recorder or tin whistle.

As traditional Irish music is in unison, all instruments play the same melody. Of course an accompanying instrument such as the guitar may also join in. Each player may, and should, add their own individual interpretation and ornamentation to the melody. Professional players sometimes highly ornament the melody. If each player in a traditional Irish folk session plays their ornaments such as trills and glissandos at different places, a simple melody may be transformed into a rich and varied creation. The songs in this collection are presented in their simplest form, without ornamentation. Each player may add their own ornaments and experiment with their own individual interpretation. There are no creative boundaries. The printed music should serve as inspiration.

Irish music always lends itself to playing together and also overlaps with other musical styles such as rock and classical. There are even excellent techno-music productions with folk elements. However, traditional music remains the cores, just as the round table in the pub or living room remains the place where the music is created. A cozy and sociable atmosphere, twinkling eyes, having fun and making music together, escaping from every-day life, all this is valued more highly by traditional musicians than playing exactly according to notation. This collection is intended to encourage such joyful, cozy togetherness.

Contents

Dunmore Lassies - Trad. ed.
