The French impressionists were the first composers to emancipate the wind instruments as embodying individual timbres, rediscovering their possibilities as solo instruments in the orchestra, which had been lost by the type of orchestration current up till then to a large extent, in which composers tended to pull the string or wind stops as on an organ not equipped with solo registers. This is the period when our collection starts, continuing right up to most recent times. Obviously, no claim for completeness can be made in any way as regards the 'tricky passages' in modern symphonic literature; on the other hand, the book includes three works for smaller orchestra, some of the movements being printed unabridged.
