He received his first music lessons from his father, who was an organist and a village schoolmaster, an older brother and  the local Lutheran minister.  After working for a short time as a music teacher in Luttringhausen and Elberfeld, Wilms moved to Amsterdam in 1791. Here he deepened his musical education by studying theory with Georg Caspar Hodermann. Before long he was playing in various orchestras, including that of the Felix Meritis society, in which he was second flutist; he also embarked on a career as a concert pianist.
