Suite
Moss, P

Born 1949, Bydgoszcz, Poland. He is as prolific as his work is diverse. His early years in Poland writing for cinema and theatre are still traceable influences but his compositional style owes more to the dramatic shift which occurred on meeting Nadia Boulanger in 1976. An encounter which 'changed my way of thinking, my artistic ethic...I understood that the responsibility of the artist is to professional rigour...not to waste the gift which not his alone...'. There is immense suppleness in his work, straddling multiple techniques of composition, tradition and iconoclasm. Piotr Moss would probably align himself with the romantics and neo-romantics, and it is the essential humanism pervading his work that renders it immediately more accessible and less hermetic than that of his contemporaries.

Piotr Moss, born in 1949 Poland, is as prolific as his work is diverse. His early years in Polish writing, for cinema and theater, remain traceable influences in his work to this day, but his compositional style owes more to the dramatic shift which occurred on meeting Nadia Boulanger in 1979. His work is characterized by immense suppleness, straddling multiple techniques of composition and tradition - though owing a great deal to the romantics and the neo-romantics.

The Suite for flute and piano, written in 1984, adheres closely to Moss s later compositional style. There are academic influences, true, but the Suite is inherently playful and accessible. Five movements allow Moss to run the gamut from more dryly tongue-in-cheek (1 Prelude and 3 Intermezzo) to fully neo-romantic (2 Nocturne and 4 Sarabande), concluding with a triumphant (yet still playful) finale.
