Moderne Orchesterstudien fur Flote [Modern Orchestral Studies for Flute] Vol. 2
Various

Moderne Orchesterstudien fur Flote [Modern Orchestral Studies for Flute] Volume 2 is a collection of famous orchestral flute excerpts from the twentieth century.

'The need has long been felt for orchestral studies compiled from the standard works of the twentieth century, for the difficulties these works present require a technique and a sense of tone and rhythm that cannot be acquired by the practice of the well known studies selected from the classical and romantic repertoire. The French impressionists were the first composers to emancipate the wind instruments as embodying individual timbres, rediscovering their possibilities as solo instruments in the orchestra, which had been lost by the type of orchestration current up till then to a large extent, in which composers tended to pull the string or wind stops as on an organ not equipped with solo registers. This is the period when our collection starts, continuing right up to most recent times. Obviously, no claim for completeness can be made in any way as regards the 'tricky passages' in modern symphonic literature; on the other hand, the book includes three works for smaller orchestra, some of the movements being printed unabridged. These examples are typical for the difficulties facing the contemporary orchestral player in the shape of wide leaps, fast and extreme dynamic changes, sometimes in unusual registers, complicated rhythms, and frequent changes of time.'
