Born in 1784, Dressler was first flute in the orchestra of the Karntnertor Theater in Vienna and the Royal Orchestra in Hanover. His output for flute includes chamber music, solo pieces, and several works for flute and guitar. This particular work is an arrangement of themes from the opera Joseph et ses freres de Mehul by Etienne-Nicolas Mehul. The six variations showcase the technical capabilities of both instruments.
