Konzert in D [Concerto in D major] KV 314 (285d)

Mozart, WA

Throughout his career Mozart had a special feeling for the wind instruments. Not only did he add a distinctive flavor to the wind band in his orchestral music - indeed, his writing for winds became a define and inimitable features of his music - he also wrote compositions for wind players in his circle of friends.

The correspondence with Mozart's family as well as certain aspects of the Concerto in D Major, K 314, and the Oboe Concerto in C Major, indicate that the flute concerto's origins indeed lie in the oboe concerto. While working on a commission for the Duchman Ferdinand Dejean - 'three small, easy and brief little concertos and a couple of quattros for the flute' - Mozart came to be pressured for time, and historical research assumes Mozart thus simply arranged the Oboe Concerto for the flute in D major. Nevertheless, this Concerto in D has come to be a staple of the flute repertoire.

This Barenreiter Urtext publication is based on Franz Giegling's edition as found in the New Mozart Edition. This publication also includes an extra pull-out part, in addition to the flute part, with cadenzas and lead-ins by Rachel Brown and Konrad Hunteler.
