A handmade Powell piccolo is lyrical and produces a dark, sweet tone that makes the instrument sound like an extension of the flute. Powell makes piccolos from Grenadilla and Kingwood. Artisans carefully select only the highest quality wood, and promptly discard any flawed pieces. These piccolos represent the epitome of aesthetics and sweetness in a piccolo. The acoustic qualities of a handmade Powell piccolo are matched by its reliability, best met in the quality of its toneholes and pads. Each tonehole is lined with a black synthetic bushing. The handmade piccolos are finished with Powell's patented pads that provide outstanding sealing, durability, and resonance. All handmade Powell piccolos include the following standard and common features:
- conical bore
- Powell scale
- pitch, A=442
- hand undercut toneholes for ease of playing and enhanced resonance
- standard headjoint cut
