The masterclass competition welcomes flutists of all ages. Applicants submit recordings online, and the current structure includes three solo divisions.

This annual competition is open to school-age flutists graduating high school during or after the 2025-2026 school year. The first and second place winners receive $1,000 and $500, respectively, to further their flute studies.

Final round programming
The 15-minute total includes the required piece and all stage transitions. The program should reflect a wide variety of styles and periods, use works written originally for flute, and avoid repeating the recorded-round repertoire. Single movements are acceptable when performed in full; accompaniment cuts and deleted repeats are allowed, and complete variations may be omitted when at least 75% of the piece is performed.

Myrna W. Brown Artist Competition
The 42nd annual Myrna W. Brown Artist Competition is open to flutists of any age. The winner receives a $1,200 cash prize and a guest artist invitation for the following Texas Flute Festival, while second and third place receive $500 and $250.

Semi-Final and Final Rounds
Semi-finalists and finalists prepare a 25-minute program of their own choosing. The final round also includes a newly commissioned required work written especially for the 2026 competition.
Commissioned work
The required final-round commission will be sent with semi-finalist notification. The 25-minute timing for both live rounds excludes time between pieces.
Semi-Final only
The semi-final round requires 15 minutes of music and does not include the newly commissioned work.
Final round only
The final round requires 25 minutes of music, including the approximately 4-5 minute commissioned work. Finalists may reuse earlier repertoire or build an entirely new program, so long as the commission is included.
