Owl Glass Music presents 'The Caprice Project, Vol. 1' by composer Timothy Hagen.

The composer writes about this piece, 'For many years, flutist colleagues have suggested the need for more extended technique resources for students, particularly beginning and intermediate students. As a longtime teacher of beginners myself, I agree. What we have for decades called 'extended techniques' are now simply techniques for producing a wide range of different sounds that composers of our time frequently use. It therefore makes sense to teach these techniques early in a student's flute journey as fundamental building blocks of playing, just like scales and tone exercises.

'In addition to the 10 original caprices, explanatory text is included for all of the techniques introduced in the book. The first eight caprices are written as duets, giving the teacher a line to play that supports and complements the student's part. As a student progresses through the book, their line becomes increasingly independent until they arrive at the final two caprices, which are true solo pieces.'
